On August 27, 1816, several bombardments of Algiers took place by an Anglo-Dutch fleet. It was an action against the enslavement of Europeans. The purpose of the bombing was to free the Christian slaves. Thousands of slaves were freed and a treaty against slavery of Europeans was signed. However, the end of slavery was only short-lived.
