On Nov. 30, 1803, the United States purchased Louisiana from Napoleon. U.S. President Thomas Jefferson decided to send two explorers - Meriwether Lewis and William Clark - to discover this vast terra incognita.

Lewis & Clark is a board game in which each player leads an expedition to cross the North American continent. Their goal is to be the first to reach the Pacific Ocean. Each has his own Corps of Discovery which is supplemented by the Indians and trappers he meets during the journey. He must cleverly manage his characters and also the resources he finds along the way. Beware, sometimes frugality is better than abundance.

Lewis & Clark contains dual-use cards. To be activated, a card must be combined with another, which is then unavailable for a while. Thus, players constantly face a dilemma: play a card or sacrifice it. During the game, each player acquires character cards that increase his hand, building up a crew that gives him more options, but which must be optimized because he will recycle his cards more slowly. This new "hand building" mechanism fits strongly with the historical background.

Since the goal of the game is to be the first on the Pacific coast, timing and opportunistic use of the other players' positions are crucial.

This is the updated version from 2020. What's new in the reprint of Lewis & Clark: The Expedition:
- There are no more camp tokens! Instead, when you camp, you get as many Time tokens as time is lost (= addition of all suns).
- Then, when it comes to moving forward, before you actually move, you have to make as many appropriate moves (mountain or river, depending on your location) as you have Time tokens, in order to put them down. Only when you run out of Time tokens can you actually move forward.
- You no longer count race spaces occupied by other players, you just jump over them.
- You win the game if you set up camp outside Fort Clatsop with a number of Time Chits lower than the number indicated on your position (this number has been added thanks to the new sticker on the board). If you have too many Time Tokens, you keep playing until you re-establish your camp with a sufficiently low number of Time Tokens or until another player does it for you and that victory flies over your head.
